In July 2024, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Science Council (ISC) released a global foresight report: Navigating New Horizons that set out to translate future uncertainties into current decisions and assess indications of changes that could result in potential developments on the horizon that could affect planetary health, human wellbeing and the way society functions. It identified a series of critical global shifts, including growing scarcity and competition for resources, that can affect the future of planetary health and human wellbeing.
While global issues require a global perspective, they also require understanding of the unique regional contexts. Bringing a global lens to regional sustainable development conversations, and vice versa, supports forward-looking insight that can tap into the variables that may either hinder or support achieving the 2030 sustainable development goals.
During this webinar, we discussed the global and regional drivers of change that can affect the future of planetary health and human wellbeing in the near, medium, and long term. This webinar also highlighted the Global Foresight Report on Planetary Health and Human Wellbeing and the North American Consultations that contributed to it and explored what the findings mean for the Great Lakes Region.
